#PlasticFreeJuly is coming to an end! If you don’t think plastic waste is a problem, check out these images from when I took a kayaking trip with Pieter Elsen, the CEO of @canal_it_up It Up in Brussels, Belgium 🇧🇪. We collected so much trash and plastic waste from the Brussels Canal - horrible right?! The great news is that Plastic Free July doesn’t have to come to an end at the end of this month, you can continue to reduce plastic waste and single-use plastics in your life every single month. Have you heard of Plastic Free July? It's a movement and a publicly registered NGO in Australia. They're working to reduce plastic waste and plastic pollution in our waterways. If you don’t think plastic waste is a problem, think again! Pieter Elsen, the founder of Canal It Up teamed up with me in Brussels, Belgium last year, using a kayak to collect plastic waste and other trash from the Brussels Canal - the amount of trash in the canal was unbelievable! The good news is that Plastic Free July doesn't have to end this month - Pieter and his team will continue their work to fight plastic waste, single use plastics, and plastic pollution in our waterways year round! One of my greatest reflections of this week at the #HLPF is that in order to achieve the big audacious goals we've set ourselves in order to sustain our planet, we need to act NOW and we need to act COLLECTIVELY. Our goals are big and scary but our willingness to act is bigger. Drop a "💧" below if you're with me. #SDG6 #SDGs

Wow! What a day and what a phenomenal opportunity not only to be part of conversations about how we chart our path to meeting the goals set out in #SDG6 (hint - we have to accelerate by 6x! 😖) but to have been given the honour to be the Master of Ceremonies and to be in the room with so many Ministers and the UN President of the General Assembly. I have to confess it felt far away from the desert sands, forests and glaciers that have been my home for the last year, but the lessons learned and stories shared were more than present in the room - they were a critical reminder of the gravity and urgency of our water problem and the need to act. Now. Faster than ever. My key takeaways: 👉 The water situation around the world is worse than ever 😢 👉 We need to work 6x faster if we want to meet the targets set out in SDG6. To put this into context, when I first spoke at the UN about this, the number was 4x 😢😢 👉 This is the halfway mark of our march to 2030 when the SDGs need to be met 👉 We can’t shy away from this challenge on water, failure is not an option. 👉 We need game-changer processes and ideas. We’re not going to cross this chasm with small steps - we are going to need a giant leap. 👉 There is both a recognition of the problem and a willingness across governments, the UN and civil society (no companies there 😖) to act 👉 Water is everyone’s business - everyone needs to be at the table. That includes companies and marginalised communities. Ignoring them is (as one of our youth delegates said) like ‘fighting a forest fire with a bucket’ I’m not going to lie. It’s a daunting process. But so was finishing my hundredth marathon knowing I still had 100 to go. My lesson from then? Big goals need us to do hard things. And…we can do hard things. As Nelson Mandela said ‘it always seems impossible until it’s done’. Now. Let’s get this done. #MandelaDay #HLPF #SDGs

Hello NYC! Weird to be back in this marvellous and incredible city, and even more so to be back at the UN just 4 months after finishing my 200th marathon at the @unitednations Water Summit. This time I’m back for the HLPF that starts today - it's an opportunity at the halfway mark of the #SDGs for the world to review our progress since they started in 2015 and come up with some plans on how to achieve the targets they set out by their end date in 2030. This meeting is incredibly important not only because of the presence of global decision-makers but because (probably not surprisingly for everyone on the frontlines of so many of these global crises - climate change, oceans, ecosystems failure - WATER!) we are far far behind where we need to be. And this week at these meetings, these decision-makers have a choice. To give up and walk away, or to face the challenge and come up with solutions. Action won’t be easy - as Coach @jasonkoop said to me at the end of marathon 100 - the halfway mark on my way to 200 - this is when the hard work begins. But our job is to remind them - hard isn’t impossible. We can do this. Together we can turn the tide. #WaterAction #SDG6

I'm excited and honored (and a bit intimidated!) to not only be attending but MC’ing (😮) the water day of the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in NYC next week! The HLPF isn't just another UN acronym - it’s an incredibly important global platform which brings ministers, heads of state and government officials together at the United Nations to follow-up and review our planet's progress towards the #SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) 🤗🌱💧🌊 🌎 Given the reports say we are drastically behind where we need to be, I fully expect some tough conversations. But the good news is (as we know!) we can do hard things - running ridiculous distances in some of the most extreme places on the planet, or solving our global water crisis. So - bring on next week and a bunch of challenging conversations about how we can reshape our future. We can do this. #WaterAction

Lesson number 6 from running 200 Marathons in a year: Water is everybody's business - it's essential for every part of our lives and we need to become more water aware and water wise. #SDG6 #WaterAction #RunBlue

Bring on the interval training! Now that #RUNBLUE, and my 200 marathons in a year have come to an end, Coach Koop has me doing some interval training to get my legs moving a bit faster! 🦵🏼⚡⚡ For now it’s just a couple of 20s intervals with a minute of slower jogging in between, but I’m already starting to feel the positive effects on my pacing. It’s great to have a bit of variety in my sessions as well! Do you incorporate intervals into your training, and if so, how?
